Cookie Policy

Last updated: September 30, 2026

A cookie is a small text file that a website places on your device (computer, phone, or tablet) when you visit. Cookies are widely used to make websites work efficiently and to provide information to website operators.

How we use cookies

We use cookies in two contexts: analytics (understanding how readers use our site) and affiliate tracking (receiving attribution when you purchase a product we linked to). We do not use cookies for advertising, retargeting, or to build profiles for sale to third parties.

Cookies we set

Strictly necessary cookies

We do not set strictly necessary cookies beyond what your browser and our hosting provider (Cloudflare) require to serve the site. Cloudflare may use a __cf_bm cookie for bot management; this is a technical security cookie, not a tracking cookie, and does not require consent under GDPR.

To remember your answer to the cookie banner, we store one entry in your browser’s local storage (not a cookie, and never sent to us or to anyone else):

NameSet byPurposeDuration
indoorfoodgrower-consentIndoor Food Grower (local storage, indoorfoodgrower.com)Remembers whether you accepted or declined analytics, so the banner is not shown on every pageUntil you change it via “Cookie settings” or clear this site’s data. Accept and Decline are stored identically and kept for the same length of time

We use Google Analytics 4 (GA4) to measure site usage. GA4 is set by Google LLC and helps us understand which content is useful to readers.

Cookie nameSet byPurposeDuration
_gaGoogle (first-party, indoorfoodgrower.com)Distinguishes unique users across sessions2 years
_ga_<container-id>Google (first-party, indoorfoodgrower.com)Stores session state for GA42 years

Durations are Google’s defaults as published in [GA4] Cookie usage on websites; browsers may shorten them if you do not return (Google notes a maximum of 400 days in Chrome and 7 days in Safari).

These cookies are only set after you consent via our cookie banner. Until you click Accept, and whenever you decline, the Google Analytics script is not loaded at all: your browser makes no request to Google and none of these cookies are placed. If you accept and later decline, we switch analytics storage back to denied, delete the _ga cookies, turn off the Google Analytics script already running on that page (using Google’s opt-out setting, so it sends nothing further), and stop loading Google Analytics on later pages.

IP addresses collected by GA4 are anonymized before being stored. Data is retained in Google Analytics for 14 months.

Third-party cookies set by affiliate networks

When you click a product link on this site and visit a retailer’s website, that retailer sets its own cookies on their domain to track whether you complete a purchase (enabling them to pay us a commission). These cookies are set by the retailer, not by us, and are subject to the retailer’s own privacy and cookie policies.

We do not control these cookies and they are not set on the indoorfoodgrower.com domain. The main affiliate networks whose cookies you may encounter:

How to manage or opt out of cookies

When you first visit this site, a cookie banner asks for your consent to analytics cookies. You can:

  • Accept — enables GA4 analytics
  • Decline — no analytics cookies are set

You can change or withdraw your choice at any time with the Cookie settings button in the footer of every page, which reopens the banner. Declining there after an earlier Accept switches analytics off again and removes the _ga cookies.

Browser settings

You can instruct your browser to block all cookies or to alert you when a cookie is being set. The following links explain how to manage cookies in common browsers:

Blocking all cookies may impair some site functionality, though we aim to keep this site functional without cookies where possible.

Google Analytics opt-out

You can prevent Google Analytics from collecting data about your visits across all websites using the Google Analytics Opt-out Browser Add-on.

You can also opt out of GA4 data collection in your Google Account settings.
